ABB showcases innovative technologies at CIRED to enable a smarter and greener power distribution network

2015-06-19 - Event in Lyon highlights several cutting-edge solutions and recent innovations

Over 1,800 electricity distribution experts and decision-makers from all over the world gathered in eastern France this June for the four-day CIRED conference, from June 15-18, 2015. Over 700 technical papers and posters were presented and more than 100 exhibitors attended the event this year.

Visitors to this biennial global power distribution event had the opportunity to see a diverse portfolio of ABB products and solutions aimed at enhancing the eco-efficiency, reliability, safety and intelligence of power distribution networks, in line with some of the company’s key Next Level strategic focus areas.

In addition to presenting a number of technical papers covering innovative and eco-efficient solutions, ABB experts held in-depth discussions with attendees, who also had the chance to view many of the technologies on display at the ABB booth, representing the smarter and greener theme.

Supporting the evolution of a smarter and greener power network

ABB showcased a number of innovative technologies that address the requirements of the evolving grid. These included the launch of its latest line voltage regulator (LVR) product family, which addresses the stability challenge posed by the increasing amount of renewables entering the power network. The company also introduced a broadband wireless mesh router – the Tropos 6420 – that delivers reliable wireless communications for smart grid applications such as smart metering backhaul and distribution automation, also supporting the evolution of the power network.

In addition to displaying a full range of its UniGear Digital medium-voltage (MV) air-insulated switchgear, ABB presented the latest developments in MV gas-insulated switchgear for primary and secondary distribution. These included an eco-efficient switchgear which uses a sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) alternative gas mixture insulation medium, capable of reducing global warming potential by almost 100 percent – an environmentally friendly innovation that looks to a more sustainable future.
