ABB wins US$ 18 million substation order in Poland

Project scheduled for completion several months ahead of industry norm

Zürich, Switzerland, August 4, 2003 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a turnkey contract worth US$ 18 million to install a substation based on hybrid technology in Poland.

The new plant, which replaces a substation built in 1959, will upgrade the electricity infrastructure around the city of Gdansk and help meet the increasing demand for a reliable power supply. The plant will have low operational and maintenance costs.

ABB will complete the project in 21 months - several months ahead of the industry norm. The new substation is being built while the existing one is still in operation so there will be no break in transmission.

It is the first time that the Polish Grid Company (PSE SA) has decided for a turnkey installation, which ensures a single interface with the customer and highly effective project execution.

"ABB is proud to be the first supplier of a turnkey substation to upgrade the electricity infrastructure of PSE," says Peter Smits, head of ABB's Power Technologies division. "We will use our innovative systems and products to provide the Gdansk and the Polish transmission grid with superior systems which will meet the increasing electricity demand."

The project involves the design, manufacturing, testing, erection and commissioning of the switchgear, new transformers and associated equipment. ABB will supply 220kV GIS ELK14 units, 110 kV hybrid PASS M0 units, power transformers, and control and protection panels, including a substation automation system. The installation includes the option to upgrade to 400 kV in the future.

The substation caters for Gdansk's industrial and residential load and is one of the important nodes in the Polish and Eastern European high-voltage transmission network.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering their environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 133,000 people.
