LAOS
Sustainable hydropower project
A 110MW hydroelectric power plant under construction in Laos will bring sustainable power to parts of Thailand and Laos. Working as part of a consortium led by GE Energy, ABB has won a $63 million order from lead contractor EDF to supply two substations, 13 transformers, a SCADA system, electrical protection equipment and telecommunications.
UNITED STATES
Turnkey GIS substation
The Puerto Rico Power Authority has awarded ABB a $49 million turnkey contract for the supply of a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation for its Palo Seco power plant. ABB was chosen for the reliability, compactness and safety of its equipment. The main component is a 115/38kV GIS transmission centre. The project will be completed by spring 2008.
INDIA
Largest-ever transformer bank
In a $41 million project, the largest bank of power transformers ever installed in India will strengthen the country’s power network and help meet the ever-growing demand for electricity. ABB is supplying ten 500MVA, 765/400/33kV auto-transformers and ten 80MVA 765 shunt reactors to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.
BRAZIL
$30 million order for industrial substations
ABB is to supply Brazil’s leading aluminium producer, Companhia Brasiliera de Aluminio, with three new industrial substations as part of a programme to sharply increase output. The new installation will include the largest turnkey substation yet supplied to an industrial customer in the country. The 750MVA substation will provide power to a new furnace room.
BELGIUM
New transformers to control cross-border power flow
The Belgian grid operator, Elia, has placed an order for three phase-shifting transformers, which will control the power flow between Belgium and The Netherlands. The throughput rating makes the transformers, each weighing 1,200 tons, among the largest in the world. Phase-shifting transformers like these control the quantity and direction of electricity between power networks.
