Mining customers embrace the digital future at ABB Mining User Conference

ABB’s Mining User Conference, held earlier this month in Stockholm, Sweden, brought together more than 140 attendees from around the world to learn about current and future solutions to take mining operations to the next level, and how their processes can benefit from digital technologies. The event was a great success, with enthusiastic participation and collaboration with ABB’s mining customers. Stockholm. The four day event included site visits to ABB Corporate Research and Boliden’s Garpenberg mine, and an impressive agenda with some 30 technical presentations.

“In these challenging times, it was uplifting to see the engagement, the sharing of knowledge and experiences, and the continuous networking among our mining and minerals customers and peers,” said Frederik Esterhuizen, the executive host of the Mining User Conference. The 2017 conference was the 10th time for this global customer event.

The feedback from our customers was extremely positive; they rated the event as very useful. The sessions that displayed demo solutions and showed new ideas and technologies that will impact the mining industry in the future were especially popular with the customers. Digital offerings, and ABB Ability, had a premier spot in the agenda.

The event started with site visits during the first day, where customers could choose between visiting either ABB Corporate Research in Vasteras, or the Boliden Garpenberg underground mine. This was followed by three conference days packed with industry topics and interactive sessions.

Critical production areas such as grinding, open pit mining, material handling, underground mining, hoisting, minerals processing and service were highlighted in the sessions. In line with earlier events, customer presentations were featured to share real-life experiences of using ABB solutions in the field.

Six interesting demo stations, including a full-fledged operator workplace and a digital mining landscape, gave the delegates an overview of what solutions ABB can offer within:

    - Control Centers – ABB Ability solutions onsite
    - Operation Centers - ABB Ability solutions off site
    - Collaboration Centers – Remote services
    - Virtual Reality applications for Gearless Mill Drives (GMD)
    - Augmented Guidance applications for mine hoist service
    - “MRI scans” of GMDs

After the main conference program was over, the event ended with an optional boat excursion to the Stockholm archipelago on Saturday morning. This was a beautiful way for our international guests to see Stockholm.
