2013-09-11 - An ABB mobile substation has won a leading international award for ‘innovative engineering and intelligent design’.

ABB won the award earlier this year at the 2013 Australian International Design Awards, one of the oldest and most prestigious design competitions in the world.
The ABB mobile substation was named winner of the Commercial and Industrial category for excelling in all six criteria of good design - form, function, quality, safety, sustainability and innovation.
When presenting the award, the panel of Australian and international judges commended the substation’s innovative engineering and intelligent design, which enables it to be built and tested off-site, then quickly deployed to provide reliable and safe connection to the power grid.
This reduces civil works, installation, testing and commissioning on site. It also cuts delivery times by up to four months and reduces the footprint to 30 to 40 percent of a conventional air-insulated substation bay.
Mounted on a skid for easy transportation and deployment, the 66 kV module is a compact version of an outdoor air-insulated substation. It includes bay level control and protection, a gantry, DC panel for auxiliary supply, and ABB’s pioneering and hugely successful PASS (Plug and Switch System) hybrid switchgear.
PASS combines all the functions of a complete air insulated switchgear bay - circuit breaker, current transformer, disconnectors and earthing switch - in a single gas-insulated module. Such a significant reduction in the number of components and moving parts makes PASS exceptionally compact and virtually maintenance-free.
Control and protection is provided by the latest ABB IEC 61850 compliant intelligent electronic devices. The substation includes a voltage transformer fed at 66 kV and integrated into the module to provide a complete standalone product that has the versatility to operate in a wide range of applications and configurations.
ABB mobile substations are an important tool in the asset portfolio of utilities and resource companies worldwide. They can be transported by road, rail or air and quickly deployed whenever and wherever they are needed – in emergencies, to stabilize the grid, to add extra capacity, or to gain time while new substations are under construction.
ABB is the world’s leading supplier of turnkey air-insulated, gas-insulated and hybrid substations with voltage levels up to 1,100 kV. These substations facilitate the efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity with minimum environmental impact, serving utility, industry and commercial customers as well as sectors like railways, urban transportation and renewables.
