ABB wins US$ 10 million order for the largest power transformers ever installed in Jordan

Key component of Jordan’s power grid will support growing economical development

Zurich, Switzerland, April 10, 2003 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a US$ 10 million order from NEPCO, National Electricity Power Company, for the turnkey supply of power transformers and reactors for the local interconnection grid linking Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Turkey.

The contract includes design, engineering, installation and commissioning of two 400 MVA-power transformers and two 240 MVA-power transformers for the 400 kV-interconnection grid in the substations of Amman North and Qatrana, in Jordan. The transformers will be manufactured in Italy according to the global ABB transformer design concept called TrafoStar.

ABB said the order is of considerable technological importance because of the transformers’ big capacity. An advanced fiber optic integrated control system is also part of the technological content of the project allowing real-time monitoring of the transformers by the operators.
The supply will improve the national grid bringing evident advantages also to the neighboring countries. Many rural zones will be reached by the electric power, fostering the agricultural and economical development of the country. It will be possible to satisfy the electrical demand which is rapidly growing, mainly during the hot season.

The project is scheduled to be completed for the end of January 2004.

ABB’s expertise and consolidated know-how in the energy domain is confirmed once again in Middle East and Jordan, where some years ago ABB has supplied a transformer for the substation of Aqaba on the Red Sea.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impacts. The ABB Group of companies operates in more than 100 countries and employs about 139,000 people.
