ABB secures $64 million Pluto LNG contract win

2008-05-20 - ABB has been awarded over $64 million worth of contracts to supply equipment for Woodside's $12 billion Pluto Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project, currently under construction in Western Australia.

Steve Hollyoak, ABB Account Manager says, “This is a very exciting project for ABB to be involved in, particularly as it is planned to be one of the fastest developed (from discovery to first gas) LNG projects in the world.”

”ABB’s success in securing these contracts can be attributed to a number of factors. One of the main contributors was our familiarity, experience and understanding of Woodside’s technical and equipment performance requirements.”

“This knowledge has been acquired over a long period of time. ABB is able to parade a proud history of dependable supply to Woodside dating back 25 years. Our association first began back in 1983, with the supply of switchgear and motor control centres. Our more recent involvement includes consecutive North West Shelf - LNG Train IV and Train V Expansion Projects.”

”Another important factor was our successful and close working relationship with Woodside’s engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCm) contractor Foster Wheeler - the EPCm joint venture leader for both the Train V Expansion and Pluto LNG Projects.”

”Our ability to respond quickly to Woodside’s needs was enhanced by the recently signed ‘ABB - Woodside, Low Voltage and Medium Voltage Switchgear Frame Agreement’. The supply framework ensures all parties can focus on delivering the required project outcomes in the most effective way.”

Scope of supply

In addition to the switchgear, ABB’s scope of supply includes transformers, analyser systems, instrumentation, motors and machines, electrical network monitoring and control systems; along with three LCI variable speed drives for compressor applications. ABB offers a comprehensive scope of supply, which has tangible benefits that can optimise project execution speed.

The distribution transformers and switchgear packages are to be manufactured by ABB’s dedicated factories within Australia. The machines and motors, drives, instrumentation, electrical network monitoring and control systems and analysers are being supplied by the respective ABB equipment ‘Centres Of Excellence’, which are located across the globe.

The Pluto LNG Project involves construction of an LNG processing facility on the Burrup Peninsula with the gas transported onshore via a pipeline from the Pluto gas field, around 190 kilometres north-west of Karratha in Western Australia.

Woodside’s project is the first new stand-alone LNG development in Western Australia for more than 20 years. It is forecasted to produce 4.3 million tonnes per annum, which is expected to inject some $28 billion into the Australian economy over the 30 year life of the project.
