ABB wins $23 million orders to strengthen power grid in India

Zurich, Switzerland, October 13, 2015 – Ultrahigh voltage power transformers to help meet growing demand in country’s most populous areas

500 MVA 765 kV single-phase autotransformers for Power Grids in India

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won orders worth $23 million from Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID) to supply 765 kilovolt (kV) ultrahigh voltage power transformers for substations in the northern Indian states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The orders were booked in the third quarter of 2015.

Three of these ultra-high voltage transformers will be installed at the Meerut substation in the north west of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, while 14 transformers will be installed in new substations being constructed in Uttarakhand. The new substations will receive power from the Tehri Hydropower Complex in the northwest for distribution across Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, the home of the Taj Mahal. The enhanced transmission capacity will help address growing demand in the region.

“These transformers will help enhance grid reliability and efficiency, supporting India’s drive to upgrade its power transmission infrastructure,” said Markus Heimbach, head of ABB’s Transformers business, a part of the company’s Power Products division. “We are pleased to continue our close customer collaboration and boost our footprint in India, both elements of ABB’s Next Level strategy.”

ABB will design, manufacture, test, transport, erect and commission the 765 kV single-phase auto-transformers at the substation sites. The 14 transformers for the greenfield substations in Uttarakhand are rated at 266.7 megavolt ampere (MVA), while the three transformers for the Meerut substation in Uttar Pradesh are 500 MVA.

ABB offers a complete range of power and distribution transformers designed for reliability, durability and efficiency. ABB is a major transformer manufacturer throughout the world and offers both liquid-filled and dry-type transformers as well as services for complete lifecycle support, including replacement parts and components.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility, industry, and transport and infrastructure customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in roughly 100 countries and employs about 140,000 people.
