ABB to provide innovative substation solution for CE Electric UK

2009-02-27 - New indoor GIS substation will occupy one fourth the space of existing outdoor substation

Zurich, Switzerland, Feb.25, 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has been awarded a $28 million turnkey project by CE Electric UK to design and build the new Wakefield B 16-bay indoor GIS (gas-insulated switchgear) substation in West Yorkshire.

The project will help improve the supply of electricity for the local population by replacing an outdoor AIS (air-insulated switchgear) substation that is nearing the end of its service life. The use of ABB’s compact GIS switchgear will enable the new substation to fit into a building that will occupy just one fourth of the land needed by its predecessor.

The project is part of ABB’s long term framework contract with CE Electric UK for the turnkey design and construction of new and replacement substations across the north of England.

"In addition to improving power reliability and security, this GIS substation will lower environmental impact by improving efficiency and considerably reducing the installation’s footprint," said Claudio Facchin, global head of ABB’s substation business, within the company’s Power Systems division.

ABB will be responsible for the design, construction, supply and installation of the new substation. The product supply will include 16 bays of ABB’s ELK 132kV GIS equipment, 132kV XLPE (cross linked polyethylene) cables to transfer power to the substation, as well as protection equipment and low voltage AC/DC supplies. ABB will also modify the terminal towers for the overhead lines and the existing sealing end platforms to adapt them for the new installation.

CE Electric UK, a wholly owned subsidiary of MidAmerican Energy Holdings, is a leading power distribution utility in England, covering an area of 25,000 sq km and serving around 3.7 million premises through a network of over 31,000 substations, 33,000 km of overhead line and 66,800 km of underground cable.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs more than 120,000 people.
