ABB wins $19 million power order in Italy

High-voltage mobile substations to enable flexibility and provide interim electricity supply

Zurich, Switzerland, July 8, 2011 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth about $19 million from Terna for the supply of six high-voltage mobile substations. The order was booked in the second quarter.

These easily transportable substations will be located on the island of Sardinia and in Puglia, the south-eastern part of Italy. They can be used to replace fixed installations temporarily, enabling utilities to carry out planned and unplanned maintenance work, respond rapidly to outages and restore power supplies quickly. They can also be used to provide interim connections as well as supplement renewable energies and augment normal power supplies.

The 145-170 kilovolt (kV) high-voltage substations are mounted on skids and comprise key products like the PASS (plug and switch system) hybrid switchgear, protection and control systems and a range of high-voltage equipment including voltage transformers, surge arresters and cables. ABB will design, engineer, supply, install and commission the substations.

“These compact substations are designed to be mobile and can be operational within hours to provide temporary power supplies and sustain grid reliability,” said Oleg Aleinikov, head of ABB's substations business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division.

Substations are key installations in the power grid that facilitate the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity. They include equipment that protects and controls the flow of electrical power. ABB is the world’s leading supplier of air- and gas-insulated substations covering a range of voltage levels up to 1,100 kV.

Terna is Italy’s leading energy transmission grid operator and owner of the national high-voltage electricity network, with over 63,000 km of power lines across the country.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 124,000 people.
