ABB wins $38 million transformer order in India

First extra high-voltage transformers for India’s new 765 kilovolt network

Zurich, Switzerland, 27. January 2005 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a $38 million order in India for extra high-voltage transformers and reactors which will strengthen the country’s power network and help to meet growing demand.

The ABB transformers are the first key components to be delivered for a project in India to improve its power grid with a 765 kilovolt (kV) network. The contract was awarded by NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd) of India.

“This order confirms ABB’s market leadership position in India, one of the fastest growing power markets in the world,” says Peter Smits, head of ABB’s Power Technologies division. “We are pleased to contribute to India’s increasing power transmission capacity as well as
strengthening and expanding the grid.”

Under the terms of the contract, ABB will deliver eight 200 MVA, 21/765 kV generator transformers, seven 333 MVA, 765/400/32 kV autotransformers and ten 80 MVA, 765 kV shunt reactors. The transformers and shunt reactors will be manufactured in ABB’s factory in Ludvika, Sweden. ABB India will provide the local interface, logistics, commissioning and after sales support.

The units will be delivered to the newly built power plant Sipat 2 in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh in November 2006. ABB will be responsible for the transportation, erection and commissioning of all 25 units.
