ABB delivers innovation for mission critical applications

2016-05-11 - Uninterruptible power distribution in a single, modular and compact system brings power reliability to mission-critical facilities

Zurich, Switzerland, May 11, 2016 – ABB today launched its latest scalable power supply solution for use in mission-critical applications such as data centers or hospitals. By integrating ABB’s proven uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and switchgear technologies into a single, modular system, the innovative MNS-Up® saves space, time and money. For a simple 500 kW system, the space saving can be up to 20 percent and for larger system of 2 MW or more, the footprint savings can be in excess of 30 percent.

MNS-UP modular solution
The switchgear and UPS modules can be safely and rapidly swapped without disconnecting power, lowering maintenance costs and maintaining uptime. Responsible energy consumption and facility growth to match business growth is ensured through planned incremental additions.

Cisco has stated that in 2016 global internet traffic will surpass 1 zettabyte – 1 billion terabytes, having risen fivefold in the last five years. This is the equivalent of 300 billion hours of video or 5,000 times all the words ever spoken by mankind. With this explosion and today’s information economy, data centers have become one of several mission critical infrastructures that require reliable, efficient and scalable power supplies. Overcapacity is just as serious an issue for data center operators as downtime. To be most effective, a data center and its power supply must grow together, as the business expands. MNS-Up can be quickly scaled to support this requirement

Tarak Mehta, President of ABB’s Electrification Products division, said: “As a pioneering technology innovator, we look to deliver solutions that simply meet our customers’ most complex challenges. MNS-Up, is a modular solution that can help data center operators scale up their business as required.

“As part of ABB’s Next Level strategy we are focused on supporting the rapid growth of our data center customers’ business with a range of innovative solutions.”

Pilot applications in Switzerland include Green Datacenter AG of Switzerland, which uses a 5.2 MW MNS-Up system at its 7,265 m2 facility in Zurich-West and the University Hospital in Basel.
