ABB wins $24-million Kuwait power order

Energy-efficient ABB technology to help strengthen distribution network

Zurich, Switzerland, April 7, 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has secured a $24-million order from the Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water to design, manufacture and supply 450 distribution substations for one of its major distribution networks. The order was booked in the first quarter.

ABB’s medium-voltage distribution substations will support the expansion of the country’s infrastructure and help serve growing electricity needs, including increased demand from new residential areas being established to cope with population growth.

As part of the order ABB will design, manufacture, test and supply medium-voltage, sheet-metal housed distribution substations. These compact substations include transformers, medium and low-voltage switchgear, as well as other essential equipment.

“As part of its extensive portfolio, ABB has excellent technologies to serve the power distribution sector,” said Markus Heimbach, global head of the Medium Voltage Products business within ABB’s Power Products division. “These compact substations are ideally suited for populous locations where space is a premium. They are esthetically designed, with a small footprint, and help deliver electricity efficiently, safely and reliably.”

In addition, a training program for the utility’s engineers will be organized at ABB factories to provide training on the use of the equipment, as well as its maintenance and service.

Compact distribution substations provide local transformation and protection of electrical distribution cable networks and ABB has an extensive installed base of such substations around the world.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 120,000 people.
