ABB to provide substation solution in Brazil

2009-04-08 - New compact-design substation to address growing power needs of Salvador

Zurich, Switzerland, April 08, 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has been awarded a $22-million turnkey project by the Brazilian utility, Neoenergia, to provide a substation solution that will improve power availability and reliability in the city of Salvador. The order was booked in the first quarter.

When completed, the Narandiba substation, will help meet growing domestic, commercial and industrial needs for electricity in Brazil’s third-largest city, with a population of 2.6 million. The substation is a 30-year concession contract between Neoenergia and ANEEL (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica), the Brazilian electricity regulatory agency.

ABB will be responsible for the design, construction, supply and installation of the new 230/69-kV, 200-MVA substation. The main products include GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear), power transformers and a MicroSCADA-based substation automation system. The substation automation system uses IEC 61850 communications standards, which provide a common platform to help optimize maintenance and operating costs, and also provide flexibility in terms of connectivity, modification and expansion. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

"The need to reduce space requirements and minimize environmental impact without compromising energy efficiency are significant drivers, particularly in urban areas", said Claudio Facchin, global head of ABB’s substation business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division. "ABB’s compact GIS is the ideal solution."

Substations are key installations in the transmission and distribution grid that facilitate the transformation of voltage levels and distribution of electrical power. ABB has an installed base of around 500 substations in Brazil and over 10,000 worldwide, across a range of voltage levels up to 800 kV.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs more than 120,000 people.
