Inauguration of the world's most automated mine

ABB’s integrated power & automation solutions have helped to develop one of the most cost-effective and modern mines in the world. Boliden's expansion of their mine in Garpenberg was inaugurated on August 26, 2014.

The entire mine is operated from a control center equipped with System 800xA. The system controls almost all plant equipment and systems to automate the production and the administration. The Garpenberg mine is the first mine that also integrates mine hoists, mine ventilation and monitoring of vehicles in the underground mine. An integrated maintenance system allows for remote solutions for the control of the entire mine.

The Garpenberg project is a good example of successful business-driven collaboration in which all five divisions in Sweden, as well as teams from Switzerland, Germany and Finland have contributed with products, systems, services as well as dedicated and skilled employees.

“It’s not a coincidence that ABB became one of the main suppliers”, says Lars Brännström, Strategic Account Manager for Boliden. “Together with the customer, we discussed and developed the best solutions for the mine.” Lars emphasizes how important it is to work closely with the customer to understand their needs, to listen carefully and to be flexible and make necessary changes during the project. Lars also stresses the importance of management involvement.

“Mining represents a high-growth opportunity for ABB. And I am very impressed how our teams have performed in this project and how our integrated solutions have helped to implement the mine of the future at Garpenberg”, said Veli-Matti Reinikkala. "With a flexible and responsive project team ABB has delivered a complex project to a very satisfied customer that now operates one of the most competitive mines in the world."

Lennart Evrell CEO, Boliden, shows how he can follow the production at the mine and review KPIs in real-time on his iPad.
