ABB launches new Pluto programmable logic controller for rail safety applications

2016-09-23 - Pluto programmable logic controller (PLC) ensures higher levels of safety for rolling stock applications, monitoring critical areas including braking, high voltage, and emergency power

Berlin, 23. September 2016 – ABB, the leading power and automation company, has developed a new programmable logic controller (PLC) for rail safety applications. The Pluto safety PLC makes it simpler to design systems that meet the rail industry’s strict safety standards.

Giampiero Frisio, managing director of ABB’s Protection and Connection business, said: “The Pluto PLCs demonstrate how ABB technologies help customers deliver higher quality solutions that make the most challenging environments safer. Pluto PLCs embed intelligence in rolling stock and passenger applications, supervising safety-critical systems. Their enhanced connectivity and high quality makes rail safety simpler.”

Pluto acts like an onboard brain, supervising, monitoring and controlling safety functions. It monitors brake and acceleration functions, emergency power, pantograph position and protects high-voltage areas. Pluto monitors doors using Eden sensors and controls their opening according to the platform position. Other functions include monitoring and protection against overheating.

ABB’s Pluto D20 Harsh Environment and Pluto D45 Harsh Environment safety PLCs help ensure the highest safety and hazard classifications are met. They are suitable for all trains and comply with safety integrity level SIL3 and hazard level HL3.

Pluto PLCs offer high levels of compatibility with other onboard safety devices. Its design allows multiple safety sensors to connect to a single input and still achieve the highest safety levels. Multiple Pluto units can connect to the Pluto bus, enabling up to 32 safety controllers to manage large and small safety systems together.

As an All-Master-System, each Pluto unit can control its own outputs locally and read the inputs of all other units on the bus. With its protocol conversion gateways, Pluto can exchange data with systems using other field-bus protocols.
