ABB wins $18 million power order in India

Upgrade of power plant automation to improve plant efficiency and reliability

Zurich, Switzerland, Apr.19, 2011 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth $18 million from Gujarat State Electricity Company Limited (GSECL) for the renovation and modernization of control systems at the utility’s 1,260 megawatt (MW) Wanakbori, thermal power plant located in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The order was booked in the first quarter.

ABB will install its proven SymphonyTM distributed control system (DCS) and supply the complete control and instrumentation package for the 6x210 MW thermal power plant. The solution will include diagnostics and optimization packages, turbine controls, steam generator control, station controls and instrumentation, a steam and water analysis system (SWAS), flue gas analyzers, control valves, actuators and positioners. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2013.

“Our Symphony technology, domain expertise and proven project execution capabilities enable us to provide an integrated solution and will help to improve plant efficiency and reliability,”said Franz Josef Mengede, head of ABB’s Power Generation business within the Power Systems division.

There are more than 6,000 Symphony platform-based DCS installations around the world, a large number of them in the power generation and water sectors. These control systems help plant owners to reduce operating costs and increase return on asset investment.

ABB recently announced the extension of its life cycle commitment to the Symphony Harmony and Symphony Melody range of control systems as part of its ‘evolution without obsolescence’ strategy. This approach helps customers find the right balance between the introduction of new technologies and maximizing return on investment.

ABB’s long-term investment in Symphony is focused on the continued development of solutions that provide greater capacity, higher performance and new functionality across areas such as control, I/O (input/output), communications, engineering, operations, safety and security. Key application focus areas include electrical integration, operator effectiveness, plant life extension and optimization.

Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL),a power generation company with an installed capacity of about 5000 MW, delivering electricity in the state of Gujarat, through four distribution companies.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 124,000 people.
