Three Gorges - Shanghai HVDC Transmission

The second of two 3,000 MW HVDC power links to connect Three Gorges and eastern China.

ABB has built two HVDC converter stations for the second 3,000 MW ±500 kV high-voltage direct current power link to transmit electricity from the Three Gorges hydropower plant in central China to the coastal city of Shanghai. The transmission is owned by State Grid Corporation of China. The 1060-kilometer power link was scheduled to go into commercial operation in 2007 but was ready and taken over by the customer more than six months earlier - in December 2006! (See photo!)

This second 3,000 MW Three Gorges HVDC, rises the amount of power delivered from central China to the coastal city of Shanghai, from 4,200 MW to 7,200 MW.

ABB´s HVDC technology promotes more efficient use of energy resources by transmitting large power loads over long distances with low losses. The link helps to meet the growing demand for power in fast developing Shanghai, China's leading industrial and commercial center.

DC yard and converter building in Yidu
One HVDC converter station is located at Yidu (CaiJiaCong), approximately 58 kilometers from the Three Gorges power plant, and the other, Huaxin (BaiHe) at the western outskirts of Shanghai. The receiving station will feed power directly into the Shanghai 500 kV a.c. ring.
