Historian (Data Warehouse)

The Historian, referred to as the Utility Data Warehouse (UDW) is a component that archives all or selected portions of the Network Manager database for years without loss of data resolution or accuracy. Once the data to be archived is identified in the Network Manager’s data engineering environment, it is recorded in the Historian database as it is updated in the real-time database. The data quality is also recorded in the Data Warehouse database for the data points that have quality associated with them. Users can start or stop the archiving of any data point including status points, accumulator values, analog values, calculations, sequence of event points (with millisecond resolution), alarms and events and applications results.

The PI historian, a product of OSIsoft, is also supported and is tightly integrated with the Network Manager system.

The Network Manager historian supports the following major features:

  • The Historian Server stores data in a time series database designed to archive hundreds of thousands of values.
  • The Historian Client server supports operator interfaces via PCs or the Network Manager consoles. Web-based reports, historical playback, SQL, ODBC and Active View interfaces are all supported.
  • When PI is integrated with the Network Manager system, then the widely-used client software such as Processbook and DataLink can be used to access the PI database.
  • The Historian Trending Package provides numerous trend formats, giving the user the flexibility to see up to eight trends on a single display.
  • Supports historical database redundancy.
  • The analysis tool Matlab™ is integrated and used as engine for advanced calculations. All the power of Matlab is available to create advanced formulas.
  • A Calculation Wizard makes it easy to define new calculations. Raw data and processed data are handled the same way, i.e. both can be used for data mining. Calculation patterns can be defined for connection of sampled objects to a set of pre-defined calculations and sampling profiles.
  • With UDW Explorer, a Web-based tool, it is possible create powerful reports, containing very complex business logic, and present the results to the user. UDW Explorer is a pure web based tool; therefore no software installation is required on the client side. The reports are usually stored in a database for global access, and any authorized user within the company can view the reports using a standard web browser.
The Historian is flexible enough to accommodate large amounts of data input from many sources, and yet it provides powerful data mining capabilities for various purposes, such as reporting and trending.
