Kontek HVDC Interconnection

Zealand's second international interconnection.

The Kontek HVDC Interconnection between Zealand, Denmark and Germany has a capacity of 600 MW at 400 kV DC. The strongest motivation for the project was the possibility to optimally operate the highly efficient thermal power generating units of Zealand, combined with the beneficial environmental aspects of low Nox and Sox of these units. In addition both interconnected areas will gain from higher security of operation as well as increased possibilities for power exchange and trading.

In December 1995 ABB handed over the Kontek Interconnection for commercial operation to the owners SEAS (now Energinet.dk ) of Denmark and VEAG (now Vattenfall) of Germany. Even before that, the link proved to be a vital part to secure the power supply to Zealand, when, in late October 1995, an anchor of a ship broke the 400 kV AC cable between Sweden and Denmark.
