The paper web inspection system needs to classify defects correctly for faster reaction to disturbances and for better product yield management. With the new neural network-based Smart Classifier technology, defect classes can be more precisely defined according to customer need, taking into account possible problems that different defects may cause downstream in the process or in end products.
The ABB solution introduces an entirely new method of defect classification. It consists of a set of innovations that make classification significantly more efficient in changing process environments. The strengths compared with conventional approaches are:

Exploiting Web Imaging data
The Web Imaging operator interface has also been carefully designed for easy, intuitive use, even for first-time users. The integrated nature of the ABB technology enables the operator to view and use operator displays in all plant areas. This gives operators cross-functional ability and promotes a higher degree of communication in the plant.
Easy integration
A stronger total quality assurance solution is achieved when Web Imaging operates together with other mission-critical quality controls and quality assurance functions like QCS, Drives and Machine Health monitoring. The Web Imaging is also designed for easy integration with your mill´s existing third party supervisory controls. The information exchange between the Web Imaging and existing QCS/DCS systems is easily realised via TCP/IP, OPC or serial link.
