Fiber Orientation Measurement

Fiber orientation is at the very foundation of papermaking but until ABB’s introduction of a fiber orientation sensor, papermakers could not measure fiber orientation on-line and take actions that result in more production of a better quality, less costly product.

Perhaps no aspect of paper is more closely scrutinized than runnability, i.e. the paper’s ability to move through converting equipment, press, or copy machine. Poor runnability can cause you frustration, cost you time, and lower your profits. So it is no surprise that market research indicates that most paper and paperboard users rate runnability as their number one or number two concern.

Good runnability relies on proper fiber orientation.

ABB continues its pioneering heritage with the introduction of the first true on-line fiber orientation sensor. Research preceding development of the sensor indicated that the greatest insight into runnability could be gained from measuring both sides of the sheet. Curl, twist warp, misregistration and other runnability problems are worse when fiber orientation on one side of the sheet differs from the other side. The Fiber Orientation Sensor continuously measures both sides of your product for the best insight into runnability.
