Pulp Defect Analyzer

ABB´s Pulp Defect Analyzer detects and reports defects as small as 0,04mm2. The system can be installed to cover the entire width of a pulp web.

One of the most important quality factors for pulp is dirt count, which describes the overall dirt content of pulp. Typical pulp defects include small dirt spots and shives. Most of them are very small, normally less than 1 mm2. Knowing the dirt content of pulp, particularly of recycled pulp, is important for its suitability to make fine paper. Dirt count is a standardized measurement value defined in corresponding ISO and TAPPI standards.

ABB´s pulp imaging system can be installed to cover the whole width of a pulp web. An automated online inspection system based on high sensitivity digital camera technology and advanced machine vision tools inspects the whole length of a bale with consistent and repeatable results, detecting and reporting defects as small as 0,04 mm2. With the help of the applied machine vision technology the size of each defect can be determined with an accuracy of 0,01mm2.
In practice, it is sufficient to inspect only a narrow strip as the dirt content can safely be assumed to be evenly distributed along the cross-direction of the web. A pulp imaging camera can be installed either with transmission or reflection illumination.

To ensure the comparable measurement between different grades of pulp, and to provide a sustainable illumination solution, a controllable light source must be used.
