In order to upgrade older plants, ABB can adapt modern systems/equipment to be built into existing plants. There are many reasons fo carrying out technical modernization, such as:

- Better availability
- Higher reliability
- Increased power
- Reduced losses
- Extended operational life time
- A new generation of technical support
For example, old relay-based or analogue control equipment can be replaced with modern digital equipment.
