The IGBT is characterized by:
- Multi-chip design (chip paralleling is easy)
- Forward blocking only
- Current limiting characteristics
- Fully controllable turn-off
- High speed
HVDC Light
® uses IGBTs from ABB Semiconductors. The IGBT has low forward voltage drop and can handle high currents. The IGBT has a voltage-controlled capacitive gate, as in the MOSFET device. To increase the power handling, IGBT chips and diode chips are connected in parallel in a sub-module.
A StakPak IGBT has two, three, four or six sub-modules. The number of sub-modules is selected based on the current rating of the application.
