An HVDC Light link can be a very valuable asset during a grid restoration. If the AC network at one end of an HVDC Light link suffers a blackout, the HVDC Light link will be available almost instantly - if it is equipped with black start capability.
The converter station must be equipped with facilities for auxiliary power from inside the station (e.g. a tertiary winding on the main transformer or a small diesel generator) plus special control functions.
HVDC Light does not need any short circuit capacity from a synchronous compensator or a generator to become connected to the grid, since it can produce the AC voltage and frequency itself. (HVDC Classic requires some minimum short circuit capacity in order to function.)
The Estlink HVDC Light transmission is equipped with black start capability on the Estonian side.
