Power From Shore - HVDC Light

Environmentally Friendly Cost Effective Power Transmission

ABB’s HVDC Light subsea transmission system is an environmentally friendly power supply alternative for offshore installations that is more efficient and safer than the traditional generation using gas turbines. It can be shown that in many instances it is remarkably economical to supply power from shore than offshore generation using the produced gas. HVDC Light technology makes it cost effective to supply large power over long distances using robust, light weight and oil-free cables which are either buried under seabed or rock dumped for protection. Emissions of greenhouse gases from low efficiency offshore gas turbines are eliminated along with health and safety hazards associated with the gas-fired rotating equipment in vicinity of the workers. HVDC Light’s state-of-the-art solid-state converter station requires much less maintenance and is remotely controllable, thereby reducing necessary staff offshore.

In HVDC Light ABB sees a power supply solution for offshore operations that has potential to reliably and cost-effectively replace gas turbines. All in all, plant’s life cycle earnings are improved along with health, safety and environmental.
