Solution Scope: Primary and Secondary Operations
ABB's concept for terminal solutions goes by the name of
Industrial IT for Enhanced Terminal Operations and provides all functionality to manage and control your terminal in a safe, secure and well-documented manner.
Industrial IT for Enhanced Terminal Operations handles product receipt, storage and dispatch, and integrates with business systems. It was specifically designed for managing bulk plants (e.g. crude oil terminals) for primary distribution or oil, gas and chemical product distribution terminals (secondary distribution) in the most efficient way and keeping the terminal operating costs to a minimum.
This figure below shows the Industrial IT for Enhanced Terminal Operations application areas with respect to the overall petroleum supply chain. Note that IndustrialIT for Enhanced Terminal Operations can be used both for primary distribution(crude oil, etc.) as well as secondary distribution (finished products). The processes of primary and secondary distribution are highlighted within the ovals below.

| The operations highlighted in Figure 1 can be organised in a functional hierarchy. The IndustrialIT for Enhanced Terminal Operations architecture is based on the functional hierarchy, presented in Figure 2 below, which is applicable to any terminal. |

Figure 3 below is presented to demonstrate how the functional hierarchy is accomplished in the IndustrialIT for Enhanced Terminal Operations architecture. Information from the lowest-level devices and equipment, such as card readers and valves, is applied successively up the hierarchy to provide a basis for control and management of the enterprise.
In its simplest form, IndustrialIT for Enhanced Terminal Operations comprises of a single Windows NT/2000 compatible PC acting as the database and application server and operator client. This PC communicates to card readers, display devices, printers and electronic preset devices.
For high availability applications, a second redundant server may be added. IndustrialIT for Enhanced Terminal Operations may be expanded from this base architecture to include additional local or remote operator clients. For international projects, where one or more local sales clerks perform order entry for drivers as they arrive at the terminal, the IndustrialIT for Enhanced Terminal Operations architecture can be expanded to include additional sales clerk clients.
IndustrialIT for Enhanced Terminal Operations may be further expanded to include additional support for host system, tank gauging systems, PLC's for terminal control, etc. IndustrialIT for Enhanced Terminal Operations allows all of these expansions to be made via configuration options, allowing a system architecture to be created to meet exact requirements of each project. |
