Car body in the painting line

Spray Paint Booth Ventilation

Air pressure inside and outside a car spraying booth has to be balanced, so that toxic paint fumes don't escape to the factory, and the dirt and dust of the factory doesn't get into the spraying booth. With inlet vane air pressure varied constantly and the fan's energy consumption was high.

The inlet vane was replaced by ABB's frequency converter and the exhaust fan motors run at constant speed. The reference signal for the frequency converter is produced by a programmable logic controller (PLC). The frequency converter automatically keeps the air pressures in the booth and in the factory balanced during the whole painting process.

Process control and painting quality are much improved. In addition, energy costs are reduced

Solved Problem

  • Positive pressure pushed toxic paint fumes into the plant
  • Negative pressure drew dust and dirt into the booth
Solution
  • Frequency converter: 83 kVA
  • Motor: 45 kW, 1750 rpm
  • Voltage: 460 V
Benefits
  • Balanced pressure has improved paint finish quality and increased safety
  • Reduced energy consumption through optimum speed control of fans
  • Improved process control as a result of automatic pressure regulation
