ABB's AC drive maintains constant water pressure and ensures satisfied customers
The pumping station in this example has several parallel pumps, one of them is speed controlled with an ABB AC drive. This pump automatically regulates pressure at the common pump outlet when water consumption changes to maintain constant water pressure. As demand increases, the other pumps, which run at a fixed speed, are switched on sequentially. This process continues up to the maximum pumping capacity. When the demand decreases, this sequence is reversed. This kind of control provides almost stepless pressure regulation over a wide flow range.

Water distribution system
Solved Problem
Excessive energy consumption
Variable tap pressure
High pressure shocks causing pipeline stress
SolutionMaximum pump output: 1000 m3/h
Motors: 185 kW, 1480 rpm, 380 V
Frequency Converter: 266 kVA, 380 V
BenefitsStepless speed control ensures constant tap pressure
Reduced energy consumption with optimum pipeline pressure
Lower maintenance costs as pressure schocks are eliminated
