ABB's AC drive enables uninterrupted oil pumping on an oil production platform

The submersible pump system of the oil production platform consists of an ABB frequency converter and a squirrel cage motor, plus a step-down and a step-up transformer. The frequency converter controls the motor speed by changing the frequency of the supply current. The motor speed can therefore be adjusted according to the flow from the oil well and the oil can be pumped continuously. Settling of solids, accumulation of paraffins and cavitation are minimal. Maintenance, servicing and energy costs are reduced, and the pumping system is considerably more reliable.
