CAP 540 - the right tool for every task

The easy-to-use CAP 540 software tool provides the required functionalities throughout the life cycle of ABB’s 500 series protection and control terminals for transmission applications.

The efficient off-line engineering functionality of this tool speeds up the engineering phase by allowing the terminals to be engineered according to your order specifications already before the delivery. The library definition files for CAP 540 are generated by our ordering system to eliminate the risk of mismatch between the ordered terminal and the function library used in off-line engineering. The library definition files are delivered to you via an e-mail server and you can open them in CAP 540.

CAP 540 minimizes the possibility of mistakes and helps secure the optimum operation of your protection application. During off-line engineering syntax checks and compilation can be performed in order to identify all formal configuration errors. Automatic navigation from a list of configuration errors to the location in the worksheet allows errors to be quickly corrected before downloading the configuration to the terminal. The graphical information is downloaded together with the configuration and can later be uploaded from the terminal.

Outstanding communication architecture
During normal operation CAP 540 can automatically upload disturbance information from the protection and control terminals. In addition, CAP 540 sends disturbance data automatically in COMTRADE format to an ftp server in a timely manner. The data can be also distributed via e-mail. In this case the data can be filtered to avoid overloading the receiver with too much data. This enhances the usability of the received information.

The protection engineer can access terminals in different substations via a central PC, and thus handle all functions remotely via LAN/WAN (Local/Wide Area Network) and/or dial-up modem.
