Static Frequency Converters for Grid Interconnections (3 ph to 3 ph)

Industrial grids with special frequencies gain both in quality and reliability if they are coupled to the regional grid. Frequency converters ensure the flow of energy in both directions. ABB offers Static Frequency Converters (SFC) for the grid interconnection of two power grids of different frequency and voltage (Medium or Low Voltage).

ABB has developed a unique static frequency converter used to couple two power grids operating at different frequencies. It features an innovative design in which the converter, auxiliary equipment and control system are housed in a single container. The main advantages of the containerized converter are its compactness, the saving in civil work costs -no special building has to be constructed on site- and the substantially shorter time required for on site direction and commissioning.

Typical applications for such grid interconnections (3 AC to 3 AC) are:

  • Special industry applications
  • Coupling of special machines / applications to an existing network
  • Grid - Interconnections between "old" and new standardized systems
  • Harbor applications (adaptation to the ship's frequency)
