Static Frequency Converters

ABB's static frequency converters are an attractive solution to the challenge of linking asynchronous electric systems, or transforming utility grade energy into the frequency and voltage required for the particular application. Whenever the grid frequency does not match the customers' requirements, ABB's Static Frequency Converters provide an economic solution.

Whenever the grid frequency does not match the customers' requirements, ABB's Static Frequency Converters provide an economic solution.

The core of high power (5 MVA to and beyond 130 MVA) systems is a compact AC-DC converter based on ABB's Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor (IGCT), an advanced semiconductor switch based on proven GTO technology. The key features of such high power converters are:

    • Frequency range from 15 Hz to 60 Hz
    • Voltage is adaptable to the customer needs
    • Very fast response time in case of sudden load changes (typically < half a cycle)
    • Independent VAr Control on delivering and receiving end
For lower power ratings (below 5 MVA), the highly standardized SFC systems utilize high performance IGBT power switching devices. The modular design makes the system very tidy, compact and serviceable. In the unlikely event that a module failed it can be quickly removed and replaced with minimal downtime.
