Burner Management System, Fire & Gas and Emergency Shutdown solutions are available either as part of ABB Ability™ System 800xA® High Integrity, delivering fully integrated control and safety, or as standalone solutions using Control Builder Safe within ABB’s Independent High Integrity Safety Solution, enabling certified safety functions to be implemented alongside any DCS or PLC.
BURNER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (BMS) SOLUTION
<p>A BMS ensures the safe start-up, operation and shutdown of burners, boilers and fired equipment by coordinating sequencing, monitoring and protection functions.</p>
Within System 800xA, the BMS solution integrates safety logic, visualization and alarms into a single operational environment. TÜV-certified burner management libraries help standardize engineering, reduce project risk and provide operators with clear, intuitive insight into burner status and interlocks.
The Independent High Integrity Safety System, engineered with Control Builder Safe, provides a TÜV‑certified SIL 3 safety solution that operates independently of the control system. It can be interfaced with ABB control systems such as Freelance and Symphony Plus, as well as third‑party DCSs, PLCs or HMIs, making it ideal for retrofits, multi‑vendor plants, or projects requiring physical and functional separation.
ABB's TÜV-certified library for complete control over the startup and operation of burners. To operate the Burner Management Solution, the AC 800M High Integrity Controller needs to be in operation either integrated with ABB Ability System 800xA or in conjunction with any other stand-alone configuration for ABB Symphony+ or Freelance, or third-party control system.
FIRE & GAS (F&G) SOLUTION
<p>An F&G safety solution continuously monitors the plant for fire, gas, and toxic release hazards, initiating alarms and automated migration actions to reduce risk and limit consequences.</p>
Integrated F&G functionality within System 800xA enables seamless interaction between detection, safety logic and operator response. Operators benefit from a unified view of fire and gas events alongside process information, with pre‑engineered, safety‑certified libraries supporting efficient engineering and lifecycle management.
When implemented using Control Builder Safe, the Fire & Gas solution operates as a fully independent safety system. It can be connected to any control or visualization solution, providing certified hazard detection and response while maintaining strict separation from the basic process control environment.
EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN (ESD) SOLUTION
<p>An ESD solution protects the plant by automatically bringing processes to a safe state during abnormal or hazardous conditions, helping to prevent escalation and minimize impact.</p>
System 800xA High Integrity delivers ESD functionality within an Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS). A common engineering framework and standardized, SIL‑certified libraries support faster project execution and consistent operation, while operators can clearly see cause‑and‑effect relationships between initiating events and safety actions.
Using Control Builder Safe, the ESD solution is deployed as a stand‑alone safety system, independent from the control layer. This approach supports projects where segregation is required, or where the safety system must interface with existing ABB or third‑party control systems without compromising safety integrity.
