OVERVIEW

ABB’s Slab SEMS creates deep, transversal stirring that promotes large equiaxed zones – typically above 50% while reducing centerline segregation, halfway cracks and ridging in ferritic stainless steel. Installed on more than 50 strands worldwide, it improves internal quality for ferritic, stainless and silicon steels and offers both internal and external installation options with low maintenance and dependable performance even during breakouts.

Key benefits

Larger equiaxed zones for stronger internal structure

Enables equiaxed ratios typically above 50%, improving strand uniformity and supporting more stable downstream processing.

Reduced centerline segregation

Deep, effective stirring reduces centerline segregation, improving internal slab soundness and consistency.

Fewer halfway cracks

More homogeneous solidification conditions help suppress the formation and propagation of halfway cracks.

Lower ridging and roping in ferritic stainless steel

Refined internal structure reduces ridging and roping, improving final surface quality and forming performance.

More isotropic properties in silicon steels

Improved stirring promotes better structural and magnetic uniformity essential for silicon steel applications.

Higher productivity and lower cost

Greater internal quality, fewer defects and low maintenance needs contribute to reduced overall casting and processing cost.

FEATURES
