In an era where sustainability is essential, ABB is leading the charge towards a low-carbon future. Mike Mustapha, Division President of ABB Smart Buildings, recently outlined the company’s ambitious journey to embed sustainability into its operations. Recognizing the significant role industries and buildings play in modern life, ABB is committed to transforming these sectors through effective change management and innovative technologies.
The Path to Net-Zero: A Collective Mission
Achieving net-zero emissions requires both technological advancements and a cultural shift within organizations. When Mustapha joined ABB, the company was just beginning to integrate sustainability into its operations. Today, he proudly shares the significant progress made and the collective mission guiding ABB towards cleaner, leaner operations.
ABB’s Smart Buildings Division leverages advancements in automation, energy management, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to empower homes, commercial spaces, and industrial facilities to optimize energy efficiency, productivity, and sustainability.
Mission to Zero™: A Blueprint for Sustainable Operations
A cornerstone of ABB’s sustainability efforts is the Mission to Zero™ program, which began with a pilot project at the Lüdenscheid facility in Germany. This initiative has led to a reduction of 750 tons of CO2e emissions annually by optimizing energy production and distribution. Today, over 20 ABB facilities have joined the program, collectively reducing CO2e emissions by 30,000 tons annually –equivalent to removing over 7,000 petrol cars from the road.
Building on Momentum: Local Expertise and Global Collaboration
ABB’s approach has evolved into a global program driven by collaboration and local expertise. Each facility tailors its sustainability solutions based on unique conditions while learning from others. This pilot-to-blueprint approach is crucial, especially as buildings account for over 30% of global energy use and 26% of CO2 emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
True transformation requires a mindset shift, with leaders empowering employees to champion sustainability initiatives. This inclusive approach fosters meaningful and lasting change.
Success Stories: Innovations in Santa Palomba and Porvoo
ABB’s commitment to sustainability is evident in success stories from its global facilities. In Santa Palomba, Italy, solar photovoltaic shelters power 17 EV charging stations, and the facility sends zero production waste to landfills. In Porvoo, Finland, ABB has shifted to recycled plastic for manufacturing junction boxes, achieving a 40% reduction in carbon footprint while conserving water.
Empowering Change Through Collaboration
Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and ABB’s Mission to Zero™ program unites employees, customers, and partners in optimizing, electrifying, and decarbonizing operations worldwide. By collaborating closely with partners, ABB aims to provide a replicable blueprint for integrating sustainable practices.
Shaping a Smarter, More Sustainable World
At ABB, sustainability is a commitment to innovation and continuous improvement. By helping industries and buildings operate leaner, cleaner, and more efficiently, ABB is building a smarter, more sustainable world for future generations. Through initiatives like Mission to Zero™, ABB not only leads by example but also inspires others to join the movement towards sustainable operations.
