Pioneering a 92% CO2e Reduction and Water-Positive Future - Nelamangala’s Mission to Zero

Discover Nelamangala’s inspiring journey to sustainability in ABB’s Mission to Zero! This cutting-edge smart factory in Bangalore, India, has slashed CO2e emissions by 92% and become ABB’s first water-positive site, all while powering India’s manufacturing boom. From 100% renewable energy to innovative water recycling, learn how passionate teams and ABB technologies are driving a net-zero future.

Overview of Nelamangala Facility

The Nelamangala facility, situated on the outskirts of Bangalore, India, is a flagship site for ABB’s Mission to Zero. Spanning 55,000 square meters, this smart factory employs nearly 1,700 people and produces electrification, robotics, motion, and automation solutions. As one of Bangalore’s first smart factories manufacturing ABB’s Smart Power products, it serves as a model for sustainable manufacturing in India’s technology hub, often dubbed the Silicon Valley of India.

Collaborative Sustainability Efforts

Employee-driven initiatives are central to Nelamangala’s success. The “Samyukth” team, meaning collaboration in Sanskrit, unites cross-functional employees to advance sustainability. They conduct energy audits, implement waste reduction programs, and innovate with biodegradable and recycled packaging materials. This collective passion for sustainability drives the facility toward a resource-efficient future.

Pioneering Water Positivity

Nelamangala is ABB’s first globally certified water-positive site, recycling 88% of treated water for landscaping and plumbing. By replenishing groundwater 1.24 times faster than it consumes, the facility has raised local groundwater levels by 33 meters over three years. Advanced rainwater harvesting and an efficient sewage treatment plant address Bangalore’s water stress, supporting both operations and local ecosystems.

Future Goals and Partnerships

Nelamangala’s next steps include on-site solar generation, enhanced water stewardship, and full fleet electrification using a “milk run” logistics model to minimize emissions. By partnering with suppliers and logistics providers, the facility aims to build a sustainable supply chain. As part of ABB’s Mission to Zero, Nelamangala continues to innovate, driving progress toward a net-zero future.
