The Smart Evolution of Open Circuit Breakers

Open circuit breakers, whose interrupting chamber is not hermetically encased in plastic but exposed to ambient air for energy dissipation and cooling, are the heart of modern energy distribution. The future belongs to intelligent switches that not only protect, but actively use data to optimize processes. ABB's SACE Emax 3, as the most advanced stage of open circuit breakers, is also a data-based control system that guarantees the highest level of cybersecurity. Through detailed measurements and comprehensive power management, the SACE Emax 3 maximizes operational continuity by combining advanced power management, highly accurate power quality measurements, and intelligent system management strategies, thereby avoiding costly downtime and ensuring uninterrupted supply to critical loads.

SMARTER INDUSTRIAL BUILDING
ADAPTIVE

The open circuit breaker was developed in such a way that it can be seamlessly integrated into existing infrastructure and can evolve in line with changing requirements. Its functions support backward compatibility, easy upgrades, extended connectivity and improved system interactions. As a result, the latest Emax generation offers scalable solutions that prepare users optimally for the challenges of the future.
SAFE

SACE Emax 3 offers an exceptionally high level of cybersecurity as well as physical security. With fault detection within 40 ms when using Light-Sense sensors, it improves safety for employees working near electrical systems. The SACE Emax 3 is unrivaled in terms of cybersecurity. Here it sets standards for the industry by achieving the protection level according to IEC 62443-4-2, SL-C 2.
RELIABLE

Advanced measurement functions and forward-looking power management ensure complete availability. Continuous temperature monitoring ensures reliable operation. Real-time data on environmental and system conditions enable early detection of stress and the prevention of unexpected failures through predictive maintenance. In addition, an integrated watchdog continuously monitors the functionality of the Light-Sense sensors and cables.
SACE Emax 3: Five advantages in one
Open communication architecture
The SACE Emax 3 can transmit more than 3,000 parameters of the power grid via Bluetooth Low Energy, NFC, USB-C and communication modules. It is now also capable of daisy-chain Ethernet. Eight communication protocols are supported: Modbus RTU, Profibus, Modbus TCP, Modbus TCP Secure, Profinet, EtherNET/IP, IEC 61850 and Com Link.
Highest measuring accuracy
The integrated Rogowski coils enable highly accurate measured values. Thanks to a software upgrade, the SACE Emax 3 offers measurement accuracy class 0.5 for active power and energy measurement and therefore complies with the IEC 61557-12 standard. As the SACE Emax 3 is classified as an EPMF DD device, no additional devices or sensors are required. This saves costs, space and installation time.
Integrated arc fault
The SACE Emax 3 offers integrated active arc fault protection via the "Light-Sense" and "Light & Pressure Sense" sensors connected to a cartridge module, so that an external relay is no longer required. With a market-leading fault detection time of less than 40 ms when using arc fault detectors, the Emax 3 increases safety for personnel and systems.
Highest cyber security
When ordering, the SACE Emax 3 can be configured with software and hardware upgrades for cyber security applications in accordance with IEC 62443-4-2. This standard covers installed devices, software and components and ensures that the safety requirements for product development and technology are met.
Our safety guarantors:
- Firmware update with anti-rollback
- Secure memory protected against manipulation of device parameters
- Dedicated module portfolio with "cybersecurity artifacts": Circuit breakers only communicate with original modules, functions available to protect against spoofing and external manipulation
- Secure USB and BLE
- ABB account manager for role-based access (Owner, Admin, Engineer, Operator, Viewer)
- Maximum security through user authentication when activating NFC and Bluetooth
Continuous temperature monitoring
In addition to an Ekip module with inputs for PT100 and PT1000 sensors, the SACE Emax 3 uses the new wireless "T-Sense" sensors to record up-to-the-minute real-time data on temperature and humidity. The sensors can be seamlessly integrated into a Bluetooth mesh network using the EPiC mobile app. The "T-Sense Busbars" variant is installed on busbars using a power-supplying magnetic strip. "T-Sense Ambient" sensors, on the other hand, are powered by an internal battery and can therefore be positioned particularly flexibly.
