ABB OPR LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEMS

ABB's OPR Lightning Protection Systems use Early Streamer Emission technology to proactively capture lightning strikes and channel the current safely to earth.

Developed from patents held jointly by ABB and the French National Scientific Research Centre (CNRS), the OPR range is supported by more than 80 years of lightning protection expertise and more than 200,000 installations worldwide.

PROACTIVE LIGHTNING PROTECTION, BUILT WITH EXPERTISE

ABB's OPR Lightning Protection Systems represent a proven early streamer emission approach to protecting structures and open-air sites from direct lightning strikes. The OPR, which stands for Optimized Pulse Rod, was developed from patents held jointly by ABB and the French National Scientific Research Centre (CNRS), and has been rigorously tested in high-voltage laboratories since 1987 with over 40,000 sparks generated. The range comprises three products, the OPR 30, OPR 45 and OPR 60, offering triggering time advances of 30, 45 and 60 microseconds respectively, enabling protection radii of up to 107 meters from a single unit. The complete OPR system includes a 304L stainless steel air terminal, a range of stainless steel extension masts, down conductors, earth coupling accessories and the RodCheck visual strike indicator, which provides at-a-glance confirmation of whether the lightning rod has been struck and requires inspection. ABB also offers the OPR Designer software, which produces complete lightning protection system designs including material listings, protection area layouts and test certificates.

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS

ABB's OPR Lightning Protection Systems are designed, manufactured and tested with high voltage lightning currents of up to 100 kA in standardized 10/350 and 8/20 microsecond waveforms. The OPR range draws on more than 80 years of lightning protection expertise and has been independently validated by third-party laboratories including SIAME, monitored by the APAVE organization, and certified by UL, reflecting ABB's ongoing commitment to performance and safety.

Safe

ABB's OPR solutions proactively generate an upward leader that captures the lightning strike and channels the current safely to earth via down conductors, providing a wide radius of protection of up to 107 meters from a single air terminal.

Reliable

Each OPR unit undergoes three electronic insulation tests at 25 kV and three electronic functioning tests during manufacture, while the RodCheck visual indicator provides at-a-glance confirmation of whether the unit requires inspection after a strike.

Durable

All structural components of the OPR are made from 304L stainless steel, with current-conducting parts machined from solid stainless steel blocks, and electronics molded in two-component urethane resin to eliminate oxidation and protect against climatic variation.

Versatile

Three OPR efficiency levels with triggering time advances of 30, 45 and 60 microseconds enable the protection solution to be optimized for protection levels LPL I through IV, covering structures from small buildings to large industrial sites and open-air facilities.

Easy installation

The OPR air terminal is ordered separately from its stainless steel extension mast, available in heights from 1.3 m to 3 m, with a comprehensive range of roof mast fixings, lateral fixings, conductor fasteners and guying kits to suit most installation types and roof surfaces.

Cost-effective

A single OPR air terminal can protect a radius of up to 107 meters, significantly reducing the number of components and down conductors required compared to alternative protection methods such as meshed cage systems, lowering overall installation costs.

Monitorable

The mechanical lightning stroke counter records each lightning strike current between 0.15 kA and 100 kA to IEC EN 62561-6, supporting periodic installation reviews, while the RodCheck system provides a passive visual indicator of strike intensity without the need for batteries or active electronics.

Compliant

Certifications include NF C 17-102 (September 2011 edition), IEC/BS EN 62305-2, IEC EN 62561-6, ISO 9001, UL (February 2017) and Qualifoudre, with full testing overseen by the APAVE organization and validated at the SIAME laboratory, Pau University, France.
