FURSE® SURGE PROTECTION

ABB's Furse range of Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) delivers fully coordinated protection against transient overvoltages on mains power, data, signal and telecoms lines to keep critical electronic systems operating safely and continuously. Designed to form part of a complete lightning protection solution to IEC/BS EN 62305 and BS 7671, the Furse SPDs range covers applications from service entrance equipotential bonding through to protection of sensitive terminal equipment.

KEEPING CRITICAL ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS SAFE AND RUNNING

ABB's Furse® Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) provides fully coordinated protection for the electronic systems that power modern buildings, infrastructure, industrial facilities and beyond. Transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes or electrical switching can reach magnitudes of up to 6,000 volts in a standard power distribution system, well beyond the threshold tolerated by most electronic equipment. Furse SPDs address this risk across all incoming and outgoing metallic service lines with a comprehensive selection covering mains power SPDs for single and three phase supplies across voltages from 240 V to 1000 V, data and signal line SPDs for industrial and fieldbus applications, telecom and computer line SPDs for PBX, ISDN and Cat-6 Ethernet systems, and specialist SPDs for BESS, photovoltaic solar panel systems and wind turbine installations. Combined Type 1+2+3 devices simplify system design by delivering both equipotential bonding and transient overvoltage protection in a single unit, while active status indication and remote monitoring via volt-free contact help ensure protection is always visible and verifiable.

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Many of ABB's Furse SPDs are designed and manufactured at the Furse facility in Nottingham, United Kingdom, drawing on more than 130 years of earthing and lightning protection expertise. Furse SPDs are widely specified to ensure the continuous operation of critical electronic systems, forming part of a complete lightning protection solution to IEC/BS EN 62305 and BS 7671.

Protective

Combined Type 1+2+3 SPDs such as the ESP M1 & D1 series deliver both equipotential bonding and full mode transient overvoltage protection in a single unit, with very low let-through voltage enhanced to IEC/BS EN 62305 to minimize the risk of flashover and electric shock.

Reliable

Pluggable protection modules with anti-vibration locking clips allow simple end-of-life replacement, and active status indication with volt-free contact enables remote monitoring via a building management system to help ensure protection is always in place.

Comprehensive

The full Furse SPD range covers mains power SPDs for supplies from 240 V to 1000 V, data and signal line SPDs for industrial fieldbus and HART applications, telecom and computer line SPDs for Cat-6 Ethernet, PBX and ISDN systems, and specialist SPDs for photovoltaic and wind turbine installations.

Easy installation

Compact DIN rail mounting to a standard 35 mm top hat rail with an innovative locking clip enables fast and accurate positioning within distribution panel boards, while a range of weatherproof and metallic enclosures is available for outdoor and industrial applications.

Continuous operation

Full mode protection, capable of handling both common and differential mode transients including partial lightning currents and electrical switching events, helps ensure protected equipment continues to operate without disruption.

Flexible

The range spans single and three phase mains power, data, signal, telecoms, photovoltaic DC and wind turbine applications, with versions available for TN-C, TN-S, TN-C-S and TT earthing systems and operating temperatures from -40 to +80 degrees Celsius.

Compliant

Certifications include IEC/BS EN 61643, IEC/BS EN 62305, BS 7671, IEC/BS EN 61643-21, IEC/BS EN 61643-31, BS EN IEC 60529 and UL497B (selected data and signal line SPDs).
