ABB's Furse surge protection for rail and infrastructure brings together the complete range of Network Rail PADS approved Surge Protective Devices needed to protect the power supplies, signalling datalinks, CCTV and video systems, telecommunications circuits and trackside data lines that are critical to safe and reliable rail network operation. Rail networks depend on a dense and interconnected web of electronic systems to manage signalling, train detection, level crossings, CCTV monitoring, telecommunications and operational control. These systems operate in environments where transient overvoltages from partial lightning currents following direct strikes to the rail network or overhead metallic service lines, from electrical switching transients on the traction power supply and from inductive coupling caused by nearby lightning activity represent a constant and significant threat to equipment availability. Outright damage to signalling or level crossing equipment causes service interruptions and creates serious safety risks, while equipment degradation reduces reliability and shortens component lifetimes, leading to sudden or intermittent failures that carry disproportionate operational and safety consequences in a safety-critical infrastructure environment.
ABB offers a comprehensive range of Furse Surge Protective Devices specifically tested and approved for use on Network Rail infrastructure, with many products carrying Network Rail PADS approval numbers that permit their direct specification in Network Rail infrastructure projects.
The ESP SSI series addresses the most critical protection point on the signalling network. The ESP SSI/M plug-in module and ESP SSI/B base together provide combined Category D, C and B tested data link protection and combined Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 mains protection to BS EN 61643 for Solid State Interlocking mains power and datalinks, with full mode protection delivering very low let-through voltage between all conductors and a 10 MHz differential bandwidth for the 50-ohm SSI system. The ESP SSI/B base can be permanently wired into the system and the ESP SSI/M module replaced without interfering with system operation, minimising downtime during module replacement. The ESP SSI/120AC and ESP SSI/140AC provide compact trackside power protection for 90-150 V and 90-165 V single-phase supplies respectively, with three-way visual indication and advanced pre-failure warning. All four products carry Network Rail PADS approval under PA05/00471.
For trackside data, signal and modem protection, the ESP 15E and ESP 06E provide high current and high bandwidth data protection for signal lines up to 15 V and 6 V respectively, with 1.25 A current rating and 45 MHz bandwidth. The ESP 06D and ESP 50D provide data SPD protection for TD modem circuits at 6 V and 50 V, each with Network Rail PADS approval for modem protection applications. The ESP 15Q and ESP 110Q compact SPDs protect four twisted pair lines simultaneously at 15 V and 110 V for serial protocol converter assembly applications.
For trackside mains power protection, the ESP 120M1 and ESP 240M1 provide Type 1+2+3 combined power protection for 110 Vac and 240 Vac single-phase supplies respectively, the ESP 120M1 under Network Rail approval PA05/02700 for train detection at level crossings and the ESP 240M1 under approval PA05/01832 for trackside PSP power supply applications. The ESP 240-5A/BX provides low-current in-line power protection for mains supplies fused up to 5 A in an IP66 weatherproof enclosure with Network Rail PADS approval PA05/02896. For CCTV and video protection, the ESP CCTV/B provides combined Category D, C and B tested protection for coaxial CCTV cables with BNC connectors at 100 MHz bandwidth, with Network Rail PADS approval PA05/02510. The ESP TN/BX provides data SPD protection for telecommunications applications in an IP66 weatherproof enclosure for exposed level crossing and trackside environments.
