Outdoor Live tank vacuum circuit breaker
Outdoor Live tank circuit breaker with vacuum interrupter and spring mechanism, Live tank design
Outdoor OVB
ABB’s outdoor live tank vacuum circuit breaker for IEC standards, with vacuum interrupters and spring mechanism rated up 40.5 kV. It is ideal for medium voltage distribution networks, wind and solar plants, and capacitor (including back-to-back capacitor banks) switching.
ABB’s outdoor live tank breakers are available for Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPCs) partners and original equipment manufacturers (OEM) as well as end customers in the utility, renewable and industry segments for incorporating in new infrastructure or for upgrading existing networks.
Each vacuum interrupter is housed in its individual hermetically sealed for life pole housing with option of porcelain or polymeric insulators.
The spring-operated mechanism with inbuild spring charging handle is housed in a weather-proof cabinet and a sturdy extruded steel angle structure is used for mounting the breaker. Additionally structure extensions for mounting current and voltage transformers are also available on request.

Medium voltage live tank circuit breaker is a switching device used to protect medium voltage distributions network. It is designed to be installed in outdoor environments and is suitable to work in challenging conditions like heat, moisture, snow, windy and saline environments. It is installed in outdoor switchyards and is electrically coupled with instrument transformers and control & relay panel for protecting the electrical system from faults.
Medium voltage live tank circuit breaker has a vacuum interrupter to switch the normal and fault currents. The vacuum interrupters are housed inside an insulating housing made up of either porcelain or polymeric insulator. This insulated housing is hermetically sealed for life to avoid any moisture ingress that may happen during breakers lifetime.
The vacuum interrupters are coupled via mechanical linkages to a spring-operated mechanism to switch the breaker ON and OFF. The mechanism along with control wiring is housed inside a sheet metal housing to protect it from external environmental conditions. The breaker can be switched either via control switches provided inside the mechanism housing during normal conditions or via protection relay in case of fault conditions.
ABB’s medium voltage live tank circuit breaker is designed keeping operator’s safety and product reliability in mind. The key benefits to customers are:
Time proven ABB’s vacuum interrupters offering capabilities to reliably switch different types of loads like, overhead and underground networks, capacitor switching including back-to-back configuration, etc.
Compact and robust operating mechanism with optimized components and low energy needed for operation. It also has inbuilt spring charging handle for easy and safe operations even in emergency situations
Easy plug and play accessories to ensure reduced and easy maintenance
Global service network ready to attend customers in most of the countries
Options such as porcelain/Polymeric insulators, extended instrument transformer structures, extremely low temperature suitability, and currents up to 3150A
ABB’s medium voltage live tank circuit breakers are specially designed to reduce maintenance efforts over the lifetime up to 20 years. This is achieved due to:
- Simple operating mechanism that can be easily serviced at site
- Spring charging handle inbuilt inside the mechanism – no need to search for the handle at later stage or even struggle for engaging it in the mechanism
- Easy plug and play accessories
- Customised structures with option of standing pedestal to easily operate and maintain the breaker at sire
- Maintenance free vacuum interrupters, hence, no need for opening the poles during routine maintenance
- Global service network ready to attend customers in most of the countries
ABB’s medium voltage live tank circuit breakers offer lot of customer friendly options to customize the product to meet specific applications and installation requirements:
- Option for different current and voltage ratings to select from
- Option of extremely cold weathers or polluting environments
- Wiring schemes customised as per end customers practices
- Fixed height or flexible height mounting structures to match different substation practices. Also has option for structure extensions to mount instrument transformers near the circuit breaker
