Elastimold® Dielectric Switchgear
Environmentally friendly solid dielectric switchgear engineered to support the ever-changing grid.
Reliable distribution in all conditions
From increased demand and heatwaves to extreme weather events like hurricanes and flooding, the grid is challenged to maintain operations every day, in all conditions and restore power quickly if an outage occurs.
ABB's Elastimold dielectric switchgear plays a critical role in reliably distributing power to where it’s needed without oil or SF6 gas. Dead-front solid dielectric construction protects crews during operations, while modular sealed and submersible components eliminate tracking, animal infestation, corrosion and condensation issues.
Key Features and Benefits

Assembled, tested and shipped from Hackettstown, New Jersey, USA, ABB’s Elastimold switchgear provides reliability and flexibility across electrical distribution systems from pad-mount to vault, subsurface and riser-pole applications. Using field-proven technology to support utilities and industries on their energy transition journey, Elastimold switchgear meets new SF6-free regulations while reducing environmental impact and long-term maintenance costs.

Safe

Dead-front construction eliminates exposed live parts and reduces arc flash risk. Available with the optional ABB Tru-Break™ switchgear module, allowing utility crews to visually verify circuit isolation and safely ground the de-energized line before performing maintenance.
Reliable

Made with a proprietary EPDM rubber formulation that has been tested and trusted in the field for over 50 years on a solid-dielectric platform. With a silicone diaphragm, it uses air as an insulating medium
Flexible

Modular, component-based design is made of individual switch and interrupter components up to 35kV. These can be combined in an unlimited number of ways and configurations for extreme flexibility.
Cost-effective

Without oil or SF6 gas, there is virtually no maintenance required. This helps lower the total cost of ownership for the life of the switchgear.
Compliant

Helps customers meet emerging SF6-free regulations and future grid requirements.
Corrosion-resistant

Submersible, corrosion-resistant and fully shielded.
Submersible

Sealed and fully submersible to 10 feet (3 meters).
Industries We Support

Frequently asked questions
ABB’s solid-dielectric technology isn’t really new. Elastimold switchgear uses vacuum interruption with solid-dielectric insulation based on technology that’s been field tested and field proven over 30 years. Utility companies that have already switched appreciate the advantages of our switchgear.
ABB's Elastimold Tru-Break module features a patented viewport with a hotstick-removable cap, allowing workers to visually verify that circuits are truly open and isolated before beginning work. The compact, submersible module is maintenance-free, made of proprietary EPDM solid dielectric rubber insulation, rated for 20kA systems at 15-29.3kV, and certified to IEEE C37.74-2014 standards. Available factory-assembled or retrofittable onto existing single-phase and three-phase Elastimold MVS, MVI and multi-way switchgear systems, it is designed to perform in the harshest environments including wet, murky and dusty conditions.
ABB's Elastimold switchgear keeps working even when fully submerged in water up to 10 feet, hardening your grid in flood-prone areas. Air-insulated switchgear cannot withstand submersion, making solid-dielectric critical as climate patterns become increasingly unpredictable.
ABB's Elastimold solid-dielectric switchgear features true dead-front all-around construction with fully insulated bus, making it safer for crews. This design eliminates tracking between insulators and enclosures that can occur with air-insulated switchgear installations.
ABB's Elastimold switchgear has over 30 years of field-proven performance, designed and tested to reliably switch up to 38kV in harsh conditions for decades without failure.
ABB's Elastimold solid-dielectric switchgear requires no scheduled maintenance or routine cleaning, offering significant savings in operating costs over its lifespan. Air-insulated switchgear requires regular maintenance, and if neglected, can significantly reduce the switchgear's lifespan and lead to costly early replacement.
ABB's modular, space-saving design allows customization to meet unique needs with a smaller footprint than air-insulated switchgear. For pad-mount retrofits, modularity ensures the new switchgear fits on existing pads, reducing overall costs and installation complexity.
