WHAT IS NEMA MAKE IT AMERICAN®?
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association's Make It American® program provides independent, third-party certification to help manufacturers demonstrate compliance with domestic content requirements.
The program evaluates manufacturing facilities, supply chain processes and qualifying products against NEMA's standards and BABA product specifications. For customers, contractors and procurement professionals, certification provides greater transparency when identifying products for federally funded infrastructure projects.

FAQ'S
BABA stands for Build America, Buy America Act, a federal requirement that mandates the use of domestic products for U.S. public infrastructure projects that receive federal funding. BABA aims to support the US economy, create jobs, and promote domestic manufacturing. It requires each “manufactured product” to be manufactured in the USA and contain greater than 55% cost of components manufactured in the USA of the total cost of components.
No, Buy America is a colloquial term generically referring to each agency’s unique domestic preference rules when providing financial assistance (typically grants) to state and local, non-federal entities. BABA is not Buy America, nor Buy American Act, Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), CHIPS Act, nor Made in USA. Beware: in some cases, agency-unique requirements may exceed Build America, Buy America requirements.
No, The Buy American Act (BAA) of 1933 applies to products being procured by federal entities, like military bases and VA medical centers. Additionally, the existing Buy American requirements that many of the federal agencies apply to their projects vary widely. Projects that have non-BABA, or other agency rules, should be referred to your sales and/or government subject matter experts.
It is a service offered by the NEMA trade organization that allows organizations to profess compliance to NEMA’s own 70901-1-12024 standard and display a mark of compliance. ABB has certified compliance to BABA legislation independent of the NEMA standard and has leveraged a third-party audit to verify compliance.
All state, local, and private projects that receive federal funding through BABA are required to have products that meet the regulations. ABB has a wide range of products to meet these needs. Benefits include the following: • Bid on government funded projects in the US • Access to government agency grants • Certified BABA compliance from ABB providing peace of mind • Localized supply chain, reducing delays • Supports US based manufacturing • Boosts local economic resilience
