PROFINET is an open standard for Industrial Ethernet. It is used for a large variety of industries: from process automation up to motion control, as well as for functional-safety solutions.

Open standard for Industrial Ethernet

PROFINET is an open standard for Industrial Ethernet. It is used for a large variety of industries: from process automation up to motion control, as well as for functional-safety solutions.

PROFINET is compatible with all ABB drives in low and medium voltage ranges. Certified according to Conformance Class B (CC-B) supporting PROFIdrives and ABB drives profiles.

Benefits of Fieldbus and Industrial Ethernet solutions

A wide variety of fieldbus and Industrial Ethernet systems are available on the market and all major protocols are supported by ABB drives, giving you the required flexibility, compatibility and security. So, no matter what preference you may have for communication networks and automation systems, we offer the correct solution to satisfy the specifications.

Greater flexibility

ABB drives support all major fieldbuses and industrial Ethernet protocols. Because all ABB drives have the same look and feel, it is easy to switch between drive types. All ABB drives support a harmonized control profile – the ABB drive profile – so operators can use the same control logic with any supported protocol.

Easier operation

A single-wire transmission line is used for control, monitoring, commissioning, and troubleshooting of drives over a single Ethernet cable. A PLC can be used to control the drive using ABB Drive Composer Pro for monitoring and troubleshooting and to connect other devices such as a gateway, operation panel (HMI), or SCADA system.

Robust cyber-security

ABB has its own Device Security Assurance Center to improve product quality and robustness. We employ a wide range of testing techniques to uncover potential security vulnerabilities including testing reconnaissance, flooding/storm, and fuzzing test cases, as well as known vulnerability checks.

Reduced cost

The cost of installing and commissioning fieldbuses is less than that of conventional installations using remote I/Os because installation is faster and simpler, with fewer cables and wires. The ABB Drive Composer Pro software makes commissioning and troubleshooting even easier with full remote access to parameterization and diagnostics. With fieldbus you can use distributed control and benefit from cloud connectivity solutions.

Improved control system availability

ABB drives support media redundancy for cable failure protection and system redundancy for the control system. If the main controller fails, the backup will keep production running.

Seamless compatibility

The same fieldbus adapter is used for any all-compatible ABB LV and MV drives.

PROFINET topologies

→ Daisy chain (line topology)

→ Star topology

→ Ring topology (MRP - Media Redundancy Protocol)

→ Network redundancy (ACS880 drive)

→ Controller redundancy (shared devices) one or two controllers, primary and backup connections

Reliable connectivity with your engineering system

→ HTTPS protocol, used for access to PROFINET module's web page and for Ethernet tool network (like Drive Composer pro).

→ Remote access can be used to perform a start-up or maintenance for ABB common architecture drives.

→ PROFINET IO configuration web page allows to see status, to modify fieldbus parameters, to change the PROFINET IO Station Name.

→ The configuration web page also allows the extension of Ethernet capabilities for the FPNO-21 by allowing users to enable or disable the necessary features or services.

→ Able to change IP settings remotely via ABB IP configuration tool.

→ Support Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) for the time synchronization.

→ Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) can be used to collect and organize information of the managed devices on IP networks.

→ An OPC UA Server for ultimate flexibility for data collection requirements.

Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP)

→ Built-in switch for Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) configuration saves your time and cost to buy and install an extra switch.

→ The MRP network uses ring topology that includes multiple nodes

→ Controlled node has the Media Redundancy Manager (MRM) role.

→ FPNO-21 module(s) have the role of Media redundancy Client(s) (MRC).

→ Each node, MRM or MRC has a pair of ports for connecting in the ring.

→ The link speed of both ports is 100 Mbit/s, full duplex.

Shared devices

→ Shared devices is an option

→ Access one drive from two controllers through interface module

Example of application:

→ One PLC to control the drive and other safety PLC for safety communication

→ The PROFINET drive control and PROFIsafe can be used by separate PLC. With Siemens and/or ABB PLCs

PROFINET S2 redundancy solution

Increase your control system availability with the PROFINET S2 redundancy solution for ABB drives

→ All ABB drives support the PROFINET System Redundancy S2.

→ System redundancy is implemented in PROFINET interface via the Fieldbus adapter module.

→ If the main controller fails, the backup will be keeping the production running to avoid down-time.

→ Easy commissioning, as this feature available by default and doesn't require additional configuration on the drive side. The configuration is done in the PLC engineering environment.

Safety functionality and communication between a drive and a safety PLC

With optional safety functions modules FSO-12 or FSO-21, you can enable PROFIsafe over PROFINET connectivity, between your ACS880 drive and the safety PLC by adding the FPNO-21 fieldbus adapter module to your drive. This way you will have a more flexible safety solution with the possibility to add safely-limited speed (SLS) to your application while it is in use.

To ensure a reliable safety solution for your machine building needs the PROFIsafe safety functions module (FSPS-21) helps connect the all-compatible machinery drive (ACS380), general purpose drive (ACS580) or the industrial drive (ACS880) seamlessly to a safety PLC. The plug-in safety functions module employs built-in safety functions through PROFIsafe and controls the drive through PROFINET. The module has PROFIsafe controlled  Safe Torque Off (STO) and Safe Stop 1 (SS1-t) functions built-in.
