TOP INDUSTRIAL EFFICIENCY

The Top Industrial Efficiency option is our promise to deliver large motors and generators with the highest possible energy efficiency, without compromising reliability, complexity or specification compliance. It is a contractual commitment we make to provide the most efficient solution available.

CLOSING THE INDUSTRIAL EFFICIENCY GAP

The International Energy Agency estimates that energy efficiency is responsible for 37% of the emissions reductions needed to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target. Electrification and highly efficient industrial motors and generators allow industry to act on that ambition. Yet, a persistent gap remains between achievable efficiency and what’s actually realized in practice.

ABB’s Top Industrial Efficiency (TIE) is a contractual commitment to provide the most efficient solution available, without compromising reliability, complexity or specification compliance.

TIE improves efficiency from ~98.5% to 98.7-98.8%, a ~0.2% life that compounds into lifetime impact. If every standard machine delivered by ABB from 2015 –2025 had been specified as TIE, the 10-year value would have been:

Approximately 11.1 TWH

Energy saved

Approximately 5,9 MT CO₂

Emissions avoided

Approximately 740,000

Homes powered (for 1y)

Approximately 1,300,000

Cars removed from roads (for 1 y)

AVERAGE 0.5-3 YEAR

Payback on premium

More than 20 YEARS

Operational savings

Proven at the highest level of industrial performance

ABB delivered a 56 MW synchronous motor with a verified 99.13% efficiency, setting a new world record and demonstrating what TIE can achieve in real world conditions.

 • $5.9M electricity cost savings
 • ~45K tonnes CO₂ avoided
 • ~61 GWh less lifetime energy consumption
 • 3 month payback period

THE CHOICE THAT RUNS FOR DECADES

"ABB is on a mission to help industries outrun – leaner and cleaner – and this project shows how our products go beyond standards with our Top Industrial Efficiency (TIE) initiative which delivers large motors and generators with the highest possible energy efficiency."

Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Motion

"We have been purchasing ABB generators for our Geothermal power plants for 15 years. The synergy between our dedicated team and ABB's technology ensures that our power plants meet the highest standards of efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. Together, we are raising the bar for excellence in power generation, while also advancing the cause of a greener and more sustainable future."

The TIE in Action

Read our white paper

This white paper discusses the role of efficiency in reducing energy consumption and related CO2 emissions and considers the shortcomings of current international energy efficiency standards. It also shows the implications of adopting an approach where the focus is not only on a minimum efficiency performance but also on achieving a top industrial efficiency level that goes above and beyond current regulations.

LET'S TALK NUMBERS!

With the Top Industrial Efficiency option, your large motor-driven system can waste less than 1% of the energy it produces — benefiting both the planet and your business.

ABB motor sets new world record by achieving 99.13% energy efficiency

A large synchronous electric motor created for a steel plant in India is the most efficient ever made, thanks to Top Industrial Efficiency design.

Ormat uses highly efficient ABB generators to produce clean geothermal power

CASE STUDY

Ormat Technologies has been partnering with ABB for more than ten years and has sourced ABB generators for major geothermal plants in the U.S. For a new geothermal project in Indonesia, Ormat has chosen a generator designed according to ABB’s Top Industrial Efficiency (TIE) option for optimized efficiency and built from Greenforge® steel.

Energy Efficient Large Motors with No Compromise

ABB’s Top Industrial Efficiency (TIE) initiative helps customers choose energy-efficient large motors, without compromising performance or reliability

ABB motor sets new world record by achieving 99.13% energy efficiency

ABB has broken its own world record for energy efficiency in large synchronous electric motors with a new motor designed in line with its Top Industrial Efficiency (TIE) initiative which delivers equipment which exceeds standard performance benchmarks.

ABB establishes new industry benchmark: the first-ever Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for large electric motors

ABB has achieved an industry first by publishing the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for large electric motors compliant with ISO 14025:2006 Type III, covering its AMS 1120 synchronous motors series, establishing a new industry benchmark for transparency in emissions declaration for large electric motors.

ABB commits to offering customers the top industrial efficiency option

ABB has announced its commitment to providing the most energy-efficient large motor and generator solutions to its industrial customers through a new program called the Top Industrial Efficiency option (TIE).

ABB offers refunds if large motors don’t hit efficiency targets

ABB has launched an initiative to encourage the specification of higher-efficiency large motors by guaranteeing to refund operating costs if the machines do not meet promised efficiency criteria. The Top Industrial Efficiency (Tie) scheme is an attempt by the motor-maker to overcome the tendency to specify the lowest-cost machine that meets an application’s specifications.
