ABB offers a strong domain expertise in renewable power generation based on a long industry experience with a dedicated product portfolio.

Comprehensive generator solutions for every renewable energy source

We offer solutions for all renewable power applications including wind, hydro, wave and tidal, geothermal, bioenergy and concentrated solar applications.

Wind power

ABB has extensive expertise in wind generators for both onshore and offshore applications. Our solutions feature a field-proven design and high-performance insulation for maximum reliability. The space-saving design with an optimized footprint reduces top-head mass, improving overall efficiency. We ensure vibration-free operation across the entire speed range for consistent performance and durability. In addition, ABB provides expert support - delivered at the right time and in the right place - to keep your operations running smoothly.

Hydro power

Hydropower is the process of converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. It is one of the oldest renewable energy sources, with a history spanning more than 100 years, and still today it represents the largest share of globally produced renewable energy. Conventional hydropower plants typically include a dam, water reservoir, penstocks, control systems, turbines, and generators. Run-of-river hydropower plants, on the other hand, utilize the natural flow of a river without significant water storage. Their capacity is generally smaller compared to plants with reservoirs. Pumped-storage hydropower systems store energy by moving water between two reservoirs at different elevations, effectively functioning as a large-scale battery. These systems include upper and lower reservoirs, tunnels or penstocks connecting them, and reversible pump-turbine generators. Our solutions deliver reliable operation with ample thermal margins and high efficiency for maximize energy yield. The space-saving design ensures a small footprint while maintaining ease of access for maintenance.

Wave and tidal

The movement of sea waves can be harnessed using submerged or floating devices that convert wave motion into mechanical rotation to drive a generator. In regions with significant tidal variations, the flow of water during tidal changes can be captured using technologies such as propeller-type turbines, where the generator is directly connected to the turbine. ABB offers solutions with optimized power density, high efficiency and extended maintenance intervals, ensuring reliable performance and reduced lifecycle costs.

Bioenergy

Bioenergy is a renewable energy source derived from biomass. Biomass can be converted into solid, gaseous, and liquid biofuels, which are used in power plants and for transportation. Power plants generating electricity from biofuels are typically combined heat and power (CHP) facilities using steam turbines or engine-based systems with direct on line synchronous generators. Alternatively, premium-efficiency variable-speed-drive (VSD) permanent magnet generators can be applied in lower-power systems. ABB offers field-proven designs backed by deep expertise in steam turbine applications, along with comprehensive support throughout the entire turbine lifecycle.

Geothermal

Geothermal power is generated from the Earth's thermal energy. This energy can be sourced near the surface, such as from geysers, or extracted from the deep boreholes. Geothermal energy in form of hot water or steam can be utilized either directly or indirectly, depending on the application. For lower-temperature sources, heat pumps are commonly used to maximize efficiency. ABB solutions deliver proven reliability even in harsh environments, ensuring consistent performance and long-term durability.

Concentrated solar

Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV) or indirectly using concentrated solar power. Today, most solar electricity is generated using PV technology. ABB offers compact designs with an optimized footprint and high maintainability. Our solutions deliver exceptional reliability through robust, optimized designs that ensure a long product lifetime.
