High speed induction generators

Full converter (FC) concept using standard high speed drivetrain can also be realized with asynchronous squirrel cage induction generators (SQIG) instead of the high efficiency high speed permanent magnet generators. SQIGs offer robust conventional technology with good efficiency and small size.

Unlike the doubly-fed concept, the Full Converter (FC) approach routes all generated power through a full size converter. This enables complete variable speed operation and ensures advanced grid code compliance - both now and in the future - while fully separating the mechanical drivetrain from grid disturbances. With over 40 years of experience, ABB delivers proven reliability in this domain. However, implementing converters introduces significant technical challenges, particularly in electrical dimensioning and insulation design, to guarantee generators that are robust and perfectly matched to the drive system.
