Permanent magnet generators

The permanent magnet generators are synchronous machines with rotor windings replaced by permanent magnets. This provides the benefits of premium efficiency alternative for full converter concept.

High efficiency, grid support and modular flexibility

Permanent magnet generators are synchronous machines that use high-performance magnets instead of rotor windings, eliminating the need for separate excitation. This removes rotor excitation losses - typically 30% of conventional generator losses - resulting in exceptional efficiency, high power density and a compact footprint.

Operating efficiently across all speeds, they deliver maximum annual energy production at the lowest lifetime cost. Backed by ABB's proven expertise in permanent magnet technology, these generators ensure reliable performance you can trust.

Key benefits

High performance

The full converter concept totally separates the generator from grid disturbances. It offers the best performance, advanced grid compliance and full control during grid transients.

Grid compliance

Our grid friendly generators feature low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), minimizing additional losses, overheating, vibration and electrical noise.

Leader in permanent magnet technology

ABB has been developing permanent magnet technology for different motor and generator applications since the 1990s.

Low cost of ownership

Globally identical manufacturing with high availability and over 97% efficiency.

Easy serviceability and local support

Avoid unplanned outages with uptime, efficiency and cost savings.
